Via SNAV: Chi-Town's Mikkey Halsted

Chi Town’s Next Chicago is on fire right now in the music industry. On top you have Kanye West and then there is a lot of buzz around the new kid on the block Keff Chief. Well I'm here to let you know there is another Chi-Town great emerging. He goes by the name of Mikkey Halsted. I caught up with Mikkey not too long ago to listen to some of his new music. Behind this door there was a heated battle going on in 2k12. Don Cannon was in the building. I know he is a super producer on the beats but I didn’t realize he was into video games. He was 4 and 1 for the day.
It was time to get back to the business. Cannon went back to get the music ready but first he had to design one of his new Don Cannon branded t-shirts. I tell you a he’s a jack of all trades.

Photo Recap: Saber & Revok Solo Exhibitions

Two legendary graffiti artists Saber and Revok showed their new body of work at Known Gallery this past weekend. Saber's "Beautification" works feature his signature strokes of color overlaid on depictions of urban landscapes done on paper as well the large canvas pieces were definitely a treat. With "Gilgamesh" Revok continues to use mix media styles and found material as his canvas depicting beauty in decay, from dilapidated buildings and rubble of the past. Both exhibitions are on view until August 11th.

Black Velvet Paintings for Your Inner Nerd

Tattoo artist and painter Bruce White does these intricate stylized paintings featuring various often funny pop culture icons on the black velvet. He feels that working with velvet gives his paintings a degree of visual contrast that cannot be replicated by painting on any other surface. Check out some of his works beyond the fold.

Via SNAV: The Man Behind the Village

I recently caught up with one of my good friends, Mel D. Cole, owner and founder of Village Slum NYC. I met up with Mel at Karmaloop offices while he was preparing to do a shoot with a new rap group called The Werx.
We headed up to roof of Karmaloop and it feels like I've been on a lot of rooftops in the last couple of weeks. Rooftops in downtown NYC are huge, I could have actually rode a bike up there.

Mel was getting some great shots of the group. You can never go wrong with a New York City sky line as your back drop. Be on the lookout for the Werx they have a single about to drop soon with hip hop legend Black Thought from the World Famous Roots crew.

Saddle Brown

Leather is probably one of my favorite materials on footwear. It's a relatively easy material to maintain, holds its own against the elements and ages quite nicely. We upgraded our materials this season for the OTW Collection and dressed the Piercy and Stovepipe in a rich saddle leather. Premium brown uppers are contrasted by bright hits of color throughout the lacing and detailing for this two pack. Check out these releases online at the Vans web shop or find a local dealer with our stockist list. Take a closer look at this material story after the jump!

Nas - "Daughters" (Live on The Late Show)

Have you picked up the new Nas album yet? I downloaded it last night and it's been on repeat since. Life is Good is Nasir Jones' 10th studio album since his Illmatic debut in 1994 and to be honest, his craft just gets better with time. Check out his live Late Show performance of Good's lead single "Daughters" above and preview/download his album at iTunes.

I got a chance to get back to Philadelphia to check out 4 Philly legends on the 1 n 2’s. Its very Rare that you can catch this much talent on one stage. The night started of with the crowd hype to see the Fresh Prince of Bel Air's right hand man.
I'm talking about the legendary DJ, Philly's own Jazzy Jeff. After all these years Jeff still make you go how did he do that. The way he rocks a crowd is just jaw dropping.

Rich Holland's Skateable Sculptures

Currently on display at the Kiasma Museum of Modern Art in Finland skateable sculptures by artist Rich Holland. The works look like a lot of fun if you are a skater as well as visually impressive. As Rich puts it in his own words: "The work, the actual activity is considered by most the above subject, as it is mostly performed by the audience in question. The piece reflects the natural shape of a wave, but brought into focus for the use of skateboarding. You could also argue that this piece is an obvious nod to skateboarding’s surf history, as such a piece has never been created."

Interview with Kenneth Cappello

In this new interview feature we got to chat with an enigmatic and very talented photographer Kenneth Cappello. His works have appeared in variety of magazines as covers, features, ad campaigns, he's done photo exhibits all over the world and much more. Kenneth is also a music video director, proud owner of the coolest and probably the most famous dog Ciccicolina and all around awesome dude. Read on!

YS:  How did you transition from doing skateboarding related photography to doing more of a "mainstream"  photography?

Kenneth Cappello:  Ehhh... I was never a skateboard photographer, I always just took photos. When  skated I took a lot of photos of skating when I was going to punk shows etc. I took photos of that, when i was walking around drunk in NYC I took photos of that, as i became a photographer for a living you have to shoot ads and stuff to make money etc…

YS: What are your thoughts on the general notion that a lot of people call themselves a photographer just because they bought an expensive camera and got a Flickr account,  i'd imagine it wasn't an easy road for you...

KC: No, it wasn't easy when i started. It wasn't digital quite yet you had to buy film then pay for it to be processed then pay for the prints to be made or print them yourself and pay for the darkroom time… There weren't any blogs or Flickr  accounts or phones that took pictures or a website where something your friend could make…it was totally different. I used to carry prints i liked around in a photo box and show people at magazines trying to get work… Anyone can be a photographer if you have a camera thats fine, i think thats great… thats the cool thing about photography , it just gets weird when people become photographers shooting for big things based on their celebrity or who they are weather it be a famous person or a creative director etc that didn't have to pay any dues or what have you. Everything is so accessible now...

They were rocking OTWs . I usually see kids rocking their OTW on the cool out, these kids were getting busy in there pairs.
