Via SNAV: The Man Behind the Village

I recently caught up with one of my good friends, Mel D. Cole, owner and founder of Village Slum NYC. I met up with Mel at Karmaloop offices while he was preparing to do a shoot with a new rap group called The Werx.
We headed up to roof of Karmaloop and it feels like I've been on a lot of rooftops in the last couple of weeks. Rooftops in downtown NYC are huge, I could have actually rode a bike up there.

Mel was getting some great shots of the group. You can never go wrong with a New York City sky line as your back drop. Be on the lookout for the Werx they have a single about to drop soon with hip hop legend Black Thought from the World Famous Roots crew.
The Werx are out Philadelphia and besides being MCs they are also producers. They recently just landed a track on The Roots next album. You know a big part of the game is style and we see they have it sporting some OTWs for the shoot.
Its was a lot of great stories being told while we was doing the photoshoot. It’s a cool thing when you can have fun a joke with the people you are working with.
We wrapped the shoot up and went back down to Mel’s office. I got a chance to interview Mel .

When did you start photography?
I started about 7 or 8 years ago. Damn time flies!

What does Village Slum mean and when did you start it?
Villageslum is a photography LLC based in NYC. It is 100% about my photography. There's a web site: Villageslum.com that showcases my event, concert, travel, street and studio photography with a lil bit of other styles mixed in as well.

If you could pick any where in the world to do a shoot where would it be?
India! I would love to shoot Kanye over there in the slums!

What is your favorite Vans?
Checkerboard Authentic! Black and grey. I own 4 or 5 pair. I need a few more, the ones I have are beat and smell like...yeah Doritos!

Name some of things that Vans and your style of photography has in common. Vans and my photography both better when aged! Just like Vans my photography can be dressed up or can be done gritty and dirty for the streets!

What is the most off the wall photo you ever taken?
I have many off the wall pics, but here is a recent one that I like a lot.

Shouts out Mel D Cole and the Werx for a great time.
