Art As A Weapon

"Art As A Weapon" looks at the connection between street art, Democracy and Buddhism. The documentary examines the conflict of political oppression and Buddhist values in Burma and follows a Buddhist monk poet who's building a library, OBEY artist/founder Shepard Fairey painting a 30 foot mural and an elementary school art class learning how to use spray paint to create art. "Art As A Weapon" sets out to show viewers how creative expression has the power to move people and inspire action. The film is only available through donation download and the fundraising goal has been set at $30,000 by 12/09/11. Donate and download at Kickstarter.

Know the Warning Signs of Art

The "warning signs" campaign has been flipped in a humorous yet artistic way. Usually aimed at detracting the youth from drugs and alerting parents of usage indicators, the College for Creative Studies has elevated the mood of the message to highlight the behaviors of young artists. Check out all of the ad banners after the jump! "How long have you been photoshopping?" is my personal favorite.

Bruce Munro’s "Field of Light"

Bruce Munro’s "Field of Light" consists of over 5,000 bulbs of light planted into the ground. Acrylic stems are topped by frosted spheres which are threaded with fiber optic cables and lit by a color projector. The result is quite amazing as both color and light flow through the bulbs to create a uniquely captivating experience.

If this brand wasn’t around in the late '80s till the present a lot of our favorite hip hop songs wouldn't have been created. I know you're like okay where did he go? Just as the title implies, the artist makes this dinner with his mother, a native of Cuba who worked as a cook in Miami for many years. The items employed in this performance – hotplates, cookware, and utensils. Previously performed at Frac Ile-de-France/Le Plateau in Paris, France, and at Lawrimore Projects in Seattle, Washington, this ongoing piece illuminates the poignancy and beauty of familial bonds through the simple act of cooking and eating together. Photo Recap: Ron English ‘Seasons in Supurbia’ at Corey Helford Gallery

Renowned artist, art prankster, street artist and simply a fantastic painter Ron English held his solo show opening at LA's Corey Helford Gallery on November 19th. Entitled “Seasons In Supurbia” the show features 18 new paintings as well as sculptures in which he captures intimate moments in suburban life — dosed with a cocktail of subversive visuals, consumer culture, and POPaganda politics. In this series the artist explores the inability of the 21st century over saturated American soul to distinguish between political realities and pop culture illusions, constructing doll-house depictions of comic-contrived reality to compete against global belief systems. In short: Suburban Surrealism. The show is quite impressive and shouldn't be missed. Also be sure to watch this space for our extensive video interview with Ron English coming soon. "Seasons in Supurbia" on view until December 10th.
