Throwback Thursday: Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers - Ashley's Roachclip

"Ashley's Roachclip," originally performed by Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers in the early 1970s, has to be one of the most sampled tracks in the history of music. 2 Live Crew, Eazy-E, Eric B. & Rakim, LL Cool J, Run-DMC and Moby are a few of the artists who have borrowed from this song. If it doesn't sound familiar to you off the bat, try fast forwarding to the 3:30 mark and you'll definitely recognize the drum beat.

A New Spin on Gaming: The Mario Files Mixtape

We all remember playing the old school Nintendo and/or the SNES systems growing up. One of the most successful franchises from the early days of gaming is the Mario Bros. series. Video game enthusiast and YouTube disc jockey DJ Max-E plans to create an entire mixtape using audio tracks from the early Mario games. Tentatively titled "The Mario Files," DJ Max-E plans on reworking the game soundtrack by adding beats and vocals into the mix. For this preview, Max-E sampled the "Game Over" sound from Super Mario World and turned one of the most despised tracks in the history of early gaming into a relaxing arrangement of beats.

Throwback Thursday: DJ Rashida's Honey Anniversary Mix

Thus far, 2011 has been a throwback year - denim jackets and funky prints came back into style, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson returned to professional wrestling, Nickelodeon brought back their classic shows in their "The '90s Are All That" block and MTV2 started airing reruns of Martin in their "Mornings with Martin" weekday lineup. Damn Gina, 2011 is starting to look a whole lot like 1993. You want more nostalgia? DJ Rashida's Honey Anniversary Mix will fit the bill. Mixed in 2008, Rashida's mix has tracks from old school favorites such as Digital Underground, Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, Wreckx-N-Effect, Soul II Soul, MC Lyte and more. The Nujabes Documentary: An Eternal Soul

February 27, 2010 was a sad day for music because it was the day Japanese hip hop producer/DJ Nujabes died. Nujabes collaborated with Japanese acts such as Shing02 and Uyama Hiroto as well as American underground hip hop artists Substantial, Apani B, CL Smooth, CYNE and others. Nujabes blended hip hop beats with jazz vibes and paired them with articulate hip hop lyricism at its best. The Nujabes Documentary: An Eternal Soul is a tribute to the life of Seba Jun (Nujabes' real name) and chronicles his contributions to the world of music.

Are You a Collector?

Before he was an OTW Advocate, French filmmaker/photographer Dimitri Coste was (and still is) a Vans sneakerhead. In 2006, Coste was profiled in our "Stories of the Sole" book and opened up about why he started his collection of footwear. "Since 1966, Vans has simply made great shoes. As a kid growing up in France in the early '80s, I craved those shoes, the same shoes I was seeing BMX riders and skaters wearing in the magazines," he confessed. Over the past two decades, sneaker collecting has evolved into its own culture and with the advancements in technology, sneakerheads across the globe are able to connect via forums and social media. Do you have a sick collection of kicks and are passionate about the shoe game? Feel free to contact me via our Facebook or Twitter for your chance to be profiled on the Vans OTW site.

Max Fish is located on New York's Lower East Side and has become home to the East Coast's creative community. January 31st was supposed to be the location's final day of operation but to the delight of Ludlow Street patrons, Fish's lease was extended for an additional year.
