Pumpkin Sculptures

Pumpkin carving is a traditional Halloween pastime for youths and kidults during this time of year. Most keep it simple, carving standard triangle eyes and square tooth smiles. Others bring in an element of craftsmanship when creating their jack-o-lanterns, like Ray Villafane and Andy Bergholtz (above). The pumpkin artists dedicate four to five hours on each sculpture, exfoliating the pumpkin skin to form their designs instead of cutting through it. They know what they're doing, Villafane has been doing this for over ten years and Bergholtz is a longtime sculptor that recently made the switch to pumpkins. Get a closer look at their work and some tips from the duo at the Las Vegas Sun.
